My journey to Santorini started at 3:00 AM to catch the bus to the airport. Although it was hard to get up I was full of adrenaline, because it was my first international flight ever (and my second flight in general).
Thankfully I planned enough time for the security check since the security workers are currently striking. As a result, the line to get through the check was quite long and it took me around an hour of waiting. After that, everything went well and I was surprised that I didn’t even have to show any form of ID or passport to get on the plane.
At 6:50 AM the plane took off perfectly on time and everything went smoothly until we began to approach the airport of Santorini. On this day it was very windy and that meant as we went lower the turbulences got more and more. That meant that the landing was more or less very hard and even a more experienced plane passenger said that it was one of the worst landing he ever had.
After an hour's drive by bus, I got to my apartment and was greeted by my very friendly host Manolis.
As soon as I unloaded my stuff I took a quick swim in the warm and crystal clear Aegean Sea that’s only 100 meters away. In the evening I went around the beach and met Yuan a Chinese student who currently wants to travel to every continent. We went around the city and talked a lot about the comparisons between Europe and China. Through these conversations, I learned a lot about Chinese culture and how different the media pictures China as a whole.
On Friday I booked a boat tour of the surrounding volcanic islands, which was a diverse and interesting experience. At first, we climbed the active and very new Nea Kameni volcano, where you could smell, see and feel the activeness of the volcano.
On the hike to the top of the mountain, I met Nathan a volleyball coach from Ohio, who is currently on Santorini as a break between some international volleyball matches. We got along pretty well and went along the rest of the boat trip.
The next stop was a hot spring, which was water heated up by the nearby volcanoes. We jumped off the boat and at first it was pretty cold, but the closer we swam to the hot spring the warmer it got. According to the tour guide, the water was around 24°C warm and you could feel the difference from the normal ocean water temperature.
After this, we went to Thirassia, where Nathan and I got something to eat at a local restaurant. As a last stop, we went to Oia the famous village of Santorini, with its picturesque white houses.
On Saturday I relaxed at the beach bar nearby and talked with Bobbie and Stauros, who are both very nice and funny owners of the bar. (It’s currently off-season in Santorini so everyone is relaxed and everything isn’t that crowded.) As we were talking I got the idea to take some new and better photos of some food for them. So that’s exactly what we’ve done and they were pretty happy about the result.
Fira is the capital of Santorini and is the most touristic place I’ve been until now, but through recommendations from my host, I could find a bar/club that isn’t overpriced and trashy. In the bar, I met an Irish couple that is currently on holiday. I noticed that the Irish accent is the hardest English accent I heard until now, but we somehow understood what the other one was talking. (Although it wasn’t always that easy.
Today I’ll visit Akrotiri the archeological site of a highly advanced ancient civilization, which was completely killed after a volcanic eruption.

Am Freitag buchte ich eine Bootstour zu den umliegenden Vulkaninseln, die eine wirklich vielfältige und interessante Erfahrung war. Zuerst bestiegen wir den aktiven und sehr neuen Nea-Kameni-Vulkan, wo man die Aktivität des Vulkans riechen, sehen und spüren konnte.
Auf dem Aufstieg zum Gipfel des Berges traf ich Nathan, einen Volleyballtrainer aus Ohio, der derzeit auf Santorin als Pause zwischen einigen internationalen Volleyballspielen ist. Wir verstanden uns ziemlich gut und gingen den Rest der Bootsfahrt gemeinsam.
Der nächste Stopp war eine heiße Quelle, die vom nahe gelegenen Vulkan erhitztes Wasser hatte. Wir sprangen vom Boot und am Anfang war es ziemlich kalt, aber je näher wir zur heißen Quelle schwammen, desto wärmer wurde es. Laut Reiseführer hatte das Wasser eine Temperatur von etwa 24°C und man konnte den Unterschied zur normalen Meerestemperatur wirklich spüren.
Danach gingen wir nach Thirassia, wo Nathan und ich in einem lokalen Restaurant etwas zu essen bekamen. Als letzter Stopp besuchten wir Oia, das berühmte Dorf von Santorini, mit seinen malerischen weißen Häusern.
Am Samstag entspannte ich in der Nähe der Strandbar und sprach mit Bobbie und Stauros, die beide nette und lustige Besitzer der Bar sind. (Derzeit ist Nebensaison in Santorini, so dass jeder entspannt ist und nicht so überfüllt.) Während wir sprachen, bekam ich die Idee, neue und bessere Fotos von einigen Speisen für sie zu machen. Das haben wir dann auch genau gemacht und sie waren ziemlich zufrieden mit dem Ergebnis.
Fira ist die Hauptstadt von Santorini und der touristischste Ort, den ich bis jetzt besucht habe. Aber dank Empfehlungen meines Gastgebers konnte ich eine Bar/Club finden, die nicht überteuert und schäbig ist. In der Bar traf ich ein irisches Paar, das gerade im Urlaub ist. Ich bemerkte, dass der irische Akzent der schwierigste englische Akzent ist, den ich bis jetzt gehört habe, aber wir verstanden uns irgendwie. (Obwohl es nicht immer einfach war.)
Heute werde ich Akrotiri besuchen, die archäologische Stätte einer hoch entwickelten antiken Zivilisation, die nach einem Vulkanausbruch komplett ausgelöscht wurde.
